facebook Gives Us Unified Communication - Apple Gives Us Old Guys

When Apple's home page post declared an event for Tuesday morning, with visuals suggesting this would be an event the entire world should tune into, it quickly had many on edge. Would this event, tagged with the comment "Come back tomorrow for an exciting announcement from iTunes" finally deliver the iTunes cloud or backup technology we've been waiting for, or perhaps something far better?

No. Not even close.

facebook is delivering unified communication technology, tying together IM, SMS and email, while Apple is delivering 1964 music. Seriously, what does Apple think this is, Star Wars, where the consumer will buy the same thing over and over again in about 3 or 4 different formats?

The marketing of The Beatles is clearly harkening back to Apple's Think Different campaign, so from a positioning standpoint The Beatles could deliver some brand value. Apple may also be working out further deals with EMI, but it would appear after so many years worth of Beatles rumors, EMI always held the upper hand, with Apple having little to wield in negotiations.

But really, 7 AM, 10 AM, 3 PM and midnight? Really Apple, no one cares.

The contrast between Apple's announcement and Facebook's announcement was striking. While Apple adds more content to its iTunes catalog, Facebook is delivering more compelling reasons to use its platform. It's yet to be seen which announcement means more to the bottom line or market share, but clearly Facebook is youth driven, while Apple tries to connect with the late 40's and 50+ crowd. I guess Mr. Jobs can now cross off another item on his bucket list.

I'm not a facebook user so I don't quite understand the excitement. Facebook implements a new form of email and that is exciting? Really? Email? I don't get it. Nor am I a fan of The Beatles, but I would point out that their music is still enormously popular and their albums still sell in the millions. It doesn't affect me personally but I can see that this is big news for lots of people.

Don't be so proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to "check in" to where you're having lunch is insignificant next to the power of the Fab Four.
