The On/Off Switch : 60 Minutes Interview
In the 60 Minutes interview with Walter Isaacson, the author who wrote the biography titled Steve Jobs, Isaacson is asked about Jobs' view of the afterlife. Jobs thought more about God or and the afterlife the closer he got to death's door. It was 50/50 in Steve's mind, but as he faced his mortality, the afterlife seemed to be a better reality than everything just ending with death of the body.
Isaacson said Jobs thought of the possibility of no afterlife like an on/off switch. We were on one moment and then off the next. This made Jobs uncomfortable, and is exactly why Jobs didn't allow any Apple products to have on/off switches. Look at your Mac, you iPod, your iPad or your iPhone and you know what? There isn't an on/off switch. There is a way to turn Apple products on and off, but isn't a simple switch — and now we know why.
The other fascinating part of the interview was the reminder of how much of a real jerk Jobs was in his earlier years. His adoption gave him some great gifts — work ethic, familial love and teaching from his father how to build things well. However, it seems it was only later in his life that these qualities began to shine. He still could be "direct", but Jobs had more purpose of what he wanted to accomplish and to love his family was clearly among them.
For most of us, we enjoyed the "show" Steve gave us each January at MacWorld and June at the WWDC. He was a master at putting Apple in a great light. We marveled at the great products that he imagined into existence from the original Mac to the iPad. But we can only imagine the person loss to those close family and friends. We wish Apple great success going forward, but even more wish his family and friends our deepest condolences.
