Airplay and Bluetooth 4.0 Will Replace Older iPod Accessories
The iPod accessory market is huge and very profitable. Most of the market is based on the docking connector or cable. Those docking stations were nice when it was an iPod. Now, as the iPhones replace iPods, that same connector is a pain because users do not want to leave their phone in one spot.
That is all changing with the release of AirPlay and Bluetooth 4.0. These two technologies will make manufacturers very happy, as users replace their old docking station setups with new wireless versions.
AirPlay has changed the Apple TV and it is changing the iPhone and iPod accessory market. Users can send their music or videos to a TV or AirPlay compatible device instead of having to plug them in. This frees up the iOS device for other uses and allows it to be more mobile.
Bluetooth 4.0 brings some much needed additions, including low-power chips and new low-latency protocols. The new protocols are optimized for small bursts and lower sustained throughput. The new application throughput is .26Mb/s compared with classic Bluetooth of .7-2.1Mb/s. That is still plenty for sending music over the air. While HD videos will need wifi, Bluetooth 4.0 will cover the rest and do it with much less power.
Bluetooth 4.0 and AirPlay will change the way we use our devices. No more plugging the iPhone into the car iPod cable or a portable radio. As auto manufacturers begin to build Airplay into their cars, users will be able to send their music to the car stereo wirelessly and that will make customers much happier.
