WWDC 2011: Three Things To Watch For
Is it June already? Well not quite, but certainly close enough to really start sinking our teeth into what we will find at the WWDC in 2011.
Having personally attended several Mac trade-shows back in the day (not any recently since Apple has canceled such events), the anticipation for Steve or "JobsCo" to reveal something new is no different this time around. Matter of fact one can argue the stakes are even higher with so many more irons in the fire.
Software
The buzz is all about software this go around. Whether it's Lion being released, iOS 5 being previewed or some sort of streaming music/movie service dubbed as "iCloud" — there is no lack of rumors swirling about. It is clear Lion is close to being ready. Steve gave a summer 2011 release date for Lion during his "Back to the Mac" keynote in October 2010. (For those keeping score at home, June is technically summer.) That said, I don't see Lion being released at the 2011 WWDC. If anything, expect that more features will be revealed, but don't expect people to walk out with a Lion DVD. What's more likely is a preview of iOS 5 and how Lion and the new iOS work even closer together — dare I say that I'd expect some sort of file-sharing system? Yes I do dare, and I do say. Also look for how iCloud makes these two OS's co-exist in harmony.
Hardware
People have talked about the iPhone 5 making a debut or an iPad 3 showing up in some form. I don't expect either. If there is any hardware that shows its face think "Updated AppleTV" or even a real HDTV with the Apple TV software built-in. Better yet we could see a replacement for the Mac Pro and XServe? Hey it's my article, so I get to dream a little here.
Other
Unfortunately, I don't expect Steve to make this keynote. I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on this blog, but my guess is sadly the days of Steve making keynotes is over. Expect Phil Schiller or Scott Forstall to be our M.C. at this year's WWDC.
UPDATE 11:07AM PDT
Well it looks like Jobs is going to be there and that Apple published a Press Release this morning (after I posted this — I sure wish they would communicate with me better!!!) with more details about what the WWDC will be about.
