A long time ago I had the opportunity to accompany a friend to an Alcohol Anonymous meeting. It was a very sobering experience (pun intended). The building was old and the room looked like a beat up classroom. Light from outside peeked through the curtain drawn windows and smoke filled the air (this was way before any indoor smoking laws had hit the books).

I learned a lot that day. I learned that if not careful, anyone can slip into addictive, self-destructive behaviors. I learned the power of a support group and accountability. I also learned most of the people in the room were seemingly addicted to something else in place of alcohol. The smoke filled room was one clue. Another was "Bill" who needed to go from one support group to the next in order to stay sober. You may be asking, what does this all this have to do with Apple?

A while back in a keynote Steve Jobs referred to computers as trucks and cars. Trucks (aka desktops) do a lot of heavy lifting and have special functions. Cars (aka iOS devices) are lightweight and mobile vehicles for of computing/communicating. To that end I've decided I need to admit my addiction and who I am and quit trying to be something I am not.

Hi, my name is Werner. And I am a Truck.

Well, I'm not really a truck. In Steve's analogy I'd be more of a truck driver. Yes, I use a car (my iPhone 4), but have yet to find a need or real desire (except for games) to buy an iPad. If I need to be working or computing, my MacBook Air is an easy carry-along. If I go into a coffee shop and want to have browsing or e-mail nearby, my iPhone does great. I can't see where the iPad fits into my life. It duplicates my MacBook Air and yet doesn't do all that I need a "computer" to be able to do.

That said, I'm different. I'm not like most consumers. My job entails editing large text files, looking through html e-mail, editing photos, creating and responding to hundreds of e-mails a day and more. A lot of typing in other words. 250GB is barely enough room for me to live. Cramping me into 64GB would be absolutely impossible.

The iPad is a great device. It's fun, portable and extremely user friendly. That said, I'm a truck guy and likely to use a truck until I retire. I'm sure someday I'll buy myself an iPad (car), because I'll need to develop for it or I want something next to me on the couch larger than my iPhone. It will probably fill a missing niche I don't know exists yet. That said, it's nice to finally admit out loud — I'm a truck guy.
