R.I.P. RIM

RIP RIMWhile Apple has been enjoying a financial boom during this down economy (selling more Macs, more iPhones and more iPads) it seems like living in an alternate universe when talking about Research In Motion.

If it wasn't bad enough that RIM's revenue fell more than 12% for Q1 (ending May 28th) or that the Playbook has been a major dud (how's that QNX operating system working out for ya?), it looks like now even the rats are abandoning ship.

According to a WSJ report yesterday, yet another top RIM executive has left the company. What's worse is that Brian Wallace, RIM's vice president of digital marketing and media, didn't just decide to retire or try his luck in running a major retail chain (like Apple's Ron Johnson going to JC Penny). No, Mr. Wallace is now happily employed with Samsung America. Ouch, that's going to leave a mark!

At this point I don't think St. Peter, Gandhi and the Green Lantern combined could save RIM. 18 months ago I boldly predicted that Microsoft would purchase RIM by February 2011. While that prediction didn't come true, inside that prediction was the assumption that RIM would face serious stagnation if not decline.

I'll go out on a limb and make another bold prediction:

By this time next year RIM will be pushing up daisies.

And I want to modify my earlier statement, because there still could be one savior that might just swoop in and save the day for RIM . . .

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO

“Forget Skype, that's yesterday's news. I'll buy RIM for $15.5 Billion!”
