Review: Amazon’s Cloud Drive
Amazon announced a new service that provides 5GB of free data storage, called Cloud Drive last March. Any music files that are stored in the Cloud Drive, can be streamed via a media player on their Web site.
Amazon has created an Android music player for their service, but not for the iPhone. A review of this service can be found from Kevin C. Tofel at Gigaom and Andy Ihnatko. This service might be nice for Android users, but does it providing anything for Apple users?
Amazon updated their media player to support Mobile Safari. Now iPhone users can stream their music from Amazon’s Cloud Drive via a web media player. This is still not nearly as good as a real application, which they have created for Android users. Amazon needs to step up and create an application if they want to see the Cloud Drive be successful for iOS users.
The same is true for files. Cloud Drive is cheaper per gigabyte to store files in the cloud when compared with other cloud services like Dropbox. Yet, the added syncing features users receive with the other services more than make up for the price. Amazon will need to provide more features and an iOS application for their Cloud Drive service if they hope to be successful.
While Cloud Drive is just a start for Amazon, they have a long way to go before they can start competing with other cloud services that are currently on the market. Right now, Cloud Drive does not provide any compelling features for Mac and iOS users.
