October 4th. Are You Ready?
On October 4, 2011 the day of reckoning arrives — well, at least for Apple's smartphone competitors. October 4th is the day that Apple talks to us about iPhone 5 and also releases iOS 5 and iCloud.
While we expect the iPhone 5 to sport an über cool design, with new features we didn't know we needed until we see them, the power of iPhone 5 will be in the software it sports: iOS 5 and iCloud. This 1-2-3 punch is going to drive other phone manufacturers nuts. While they try and copy the hardware, they are totally dependent on Google – and perhaps some day Microsoft – to come up with something similar or something better (wishful thinking).
It's interesting that Apple revealed so much of iOS 5 and iCloud back at their WWDC. But it shows us that Apple does not believe Microsoft, Google or anyone else can come close to imitating either of these software products. It was akin to Apple's "Redmond, start your photocopiers" campaign. Once again Apple is bragging, “Here's our next OS and new method of how data should be stored and moved about called iCloud. We know it will take you two years to catch us and then we'll release iOS 6 and iCloud 2!”
October 4th has to be the nightmare of nightmares for executives at Samsung, HTC, Motorola and Nokia. They know that neither Microsoft or Google has the ability to catch or surpass Apple, and internally they know they don't have the expertise to compete with the one-two-three punch either. While they can continue to copy the iPhone form factor (and make up other silly sizes and shapes), the main headache other phone manufacturers will face is the fact that they don't have software that competes. In the end, the lack of modern, cloud-based solutions that seamlessly mate with the mobile and desktop will be their demise.
